Welcome to Wits End Intervention Services - planning, coordinating, travel companionship, addiction treatment intake, detox, residential inpatient treatment, aftercare planning, etc...
As a person with over 20 years of personal recovery and 17 years working as a certified addiction counselor within alcoholism, drug addiction, substance abuse & dual-diagnosis disorders, I can assure you that a life free from chemical dependency is possible and achievable...no matter how grave the situation may appear on the surface!
Intervention raises the bottom. This means taking power, creating the opportunity rather than waiting for it, seizing this moment in time for the sake of saving a life and saving a family. In letting them "hit bottom on their own," the results often manifest as jails/prisons, institutions, or the all-too-often devastating worst case scenario...death. The question now becomes, "Is your family willing to let your loved one sink that low, or do you want to use the therapeutic tool of intervention and present the opportunity to improve the quality and/or possibly save a life today?"
Loriann Witte - Certified Addiction Interventionist & Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor in Orange County, CA
The Family Meeting is where the intervention begins. The counselor holds a planning, education & therapy session with the intervention group (family & friends of the addict/alcoholic). We all meet the night before the intervention and the counselor leads the group toward a presentation of the message: "You have a problem and we have a solution - we offer all of our collective support to your recovery and will no longer tolerate nor enable your addiction in anyway. We love you so much we have had difficulty saying no to you, and we have now brought in a professional to guide us in setting boundaries & consequences...we will not go back to the status quo and we will not settle. Today the abuse stops; today is the first day of the rest of your life!"
Everyone has been worried sick and has differing thoughts of what should be done. The professional interventionist polls each participant's energy and collectively channels it all toward a focused objective. We discus and eliminate all of the reasons the addict will often propose for not going to treatment. We delegate his/her daily life tasks among the participants such as, taking care of the kids, the pets, the house, etc. We deal with the job status as well as any other concrete responsibilities which need addressing. We then decide what the family WILL do for the client while in treatment and what the consequences are should they ultimately decide to refuse this gift.
My success rate runs about 98%.
As an informed, educated and organized group in cohesion with our goal, we meet with the client. We do not have to solve all of the problems of the family relations nor do we have to know how the addiction can possibly be healed. We approach the event with intention and a firm outcome in mind. Our loved one must have professional help or may (and likely will) soon become involved in something unspeakable like ending up in prison, running over a child while passed out at the wheel, getting badly beat-up in a drug deal gone bad, or worst of all, death! Treatment is essential; we have done our homework and have made the best possible arrangements. TODAY IS THE DAY! We are here with all of our love and power to stop this devastating downward spiral that eclipses the human will and any good intentions like nothing else in this world!
We get the client ready and willing and bring them to treatment with a sense of new-found hope which has long since been felt. The power and intensity of the intervention opens a window of opportunity. The client is emotionally transcended into a state of willingness. Whether this state of willingness is brought about by the presentation of love & concern or the fear of consequences, the result is the same. The window of opportunity is short and we must transition in action immediately, before the denial mechanism emerges once again and takes control. The message at the end of the intervention is, "you have 20 minutes to pack, our flight leaves in about an hour." At this point we keep the stimulus very low. The client most likely is in a reflective state of mind and does not want much interaction. We need an independent means of transportation to the airport or with a family member who will not elicit any further confrontation.
When the intervention is over it is over. We stop the confrontation and let the client lean into the impartial professionalism of the counselor/interventionist. He or she is experiencing any number of combined feelings that only another addict/alcohol can truly empathize with, and that is my time to open up to them and share some of my own horrific history in addiction. As a recovering addict I sat in that chair over 20 years ago with a sense of hurt, guilt, shame, fear and anguish that no living being should be subjected to; and today, 20 years later I get to look deep into their eyes with a heartfelt understanding without so much as a single word being said. "It's going to be okay, you're surrounded by more love than you know, and the freedom, peace & joy that awaits you is likewise, beyond words!"
The therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel. The interventionist and the client fly or drive to the treatment center together and a new life begins...
The counselor completes the transition from the intervention into the treatment admission process. I make every effort to introduce them to the staff and explain the process of making themselves comfortable.
The interventionist explains to the counseling staff the disposition of the intervention, the reports of the family in an effort to equip the treatment staff with insight as to the truths the client needs to face and work through. The intervention letters are given to the staff for the client to use later in therapy when the time is right. One goal of treatment is to break down denial of the severity of the dis-ease. Another treatment goal is to resolve and let go of years of resentments and emotional baggage. Reviewing the intervention letters with a sober head and the guidance of a therapist is done to bring about an understanding of the love involved in the gift of intervention & recovery. We do recover!
"The disease of alcoholism/addiction is the only disease known to man that, in addition to stripping away everything of meaning in one's life, is actually able to successfully convince the sufferer that he or she does not have a disease!"
